four tet beat this

London based Kieran Hebden, better known as Four Tet, is a master of sample and sound manipulation. From his sprawling original catalog to his unique remixes, Four Tet has proven time and time again that he’s no stranger to getting snips of sounds to behave in interesting and exciting new ways. This week, Don’t Watch That TV sat down with Hebden as he pulled out a copy of MJ’s Thriller and proceeded to snatch and sample his way to a beat in under 10 minutes for their newest episode of ‘Beat This’.

From Hebden himself: “10 minutes is not very long to make a track, and I’ve never sampled Thriller, before so go easy on me.” That said, the Londoner manages to snag some pretty interesting sounds off the record and compiles them using Ableton Live. While this isn’t the finest example of Four Tet’s work, given the time limit I’m very impressed and the video gives a unique glimpse into the way he works. Check out the full episode below.
