The musical landscape is vast. Bedroom producers have access to powerful tools to both create and publish works all at the click of a keyboard and mouse. Drums, synth pads, and pitched vocal samples are layered and arranged by composers who sometimes have no classical training whatsoever. Electronic music in its so many forms has been around for decades. With electronic sounds and production methods so ubiquitous in today’s music, pretty much anything falls into the category. Despite this fact, the the idea of the live electronic group is not the first thing we think of when surveying the field of acts. Only a handful of acts such as Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Beats Antique come to mind. So when a group comes along whose members consist of players who have been members of bands with heavy hitters such as Trey Anastasio and Lettuce, one should take notice.
Enter Animus Rexx who is fronted by multi-instrumentalist James Casey (sampler, sax, and vocals) along with NYC jazz virtuosos in keyboardist Yuki Hirano, guitarist Randy Runyon, bassist Reuben Cainer, and drummer Justin Tyson. Together the five piece band grooves seamlessly and adventurously, exploring bass music with a blend of jazz an future soul.
Watch their new music video for “Forgive” as the band records the tune straight to tape from The Breeding Ground studios in NYC. Straight flawless. Catch them live this Sunday at the Highline Ballroom. Siriux XM subscribers can tune in to channel 29 to hear Animus Rexx in heavy rotation.
