Total Fitness, hailing from Brooklyn’s Safer At Night crew, unveiled his second foray into darkness yesterday. I spoke with him via email about his new three-track Halls of Eden EP. Stream the new EP here read our interview below. Total Fitness’ Halls of Eden is also available on Beatport.
KF: Describe the room you created these sounds in.
TF: It was in an apartment with a large window that spilled out onto an outdoor space with lots of plants and a view of the city. I was in Rome at the time, which also served as inspiration for the artwork!
KF: The Halls of Eden EP seems a bit more serene, if you will, than your last one. What did you use or do differently instrumentation-wise?
TF: I think this EP is actually more cinematic and dramatic than the first. Maybe less busy, but not necessarily more serene. When I made them, I wanted these tracks to capture a certain mood and to have a certain presence or power. They work really well together and share a singular idea.
I wanted to try something that felt a bit less formulaic for me personally in my own process. For example, I used some synths that I haven’t really done much with previously and for “Moments Us” especially, I tried to do something structurally different. That song also felt very intimate so I tried to loosely imitate a heart beating with the bass drums. Although the backbone for both “Moments Us” and “Halls of Eden” is obviously dance music, the focus wasn’t to make DJ tools. I wanted these tracks to stand up as songs inside and outside of the club/dance-floor, not just as DJ tools.
KF: What’s the ideal environment for these songs to be enjoyed in?
TF: At a toga orgy in a garden at night club-theatre hybrid.
