Monstah Black is a force to be reckoned with.
The versatile Brooklyn-based artist has for years built a reputation in the dance, performance art, fashion and music worlds (among others) for his stunning originality and uncompromising vision. His latest single, “Caught,” is no exception.
Black crafts a seductively minimal track propelled by slow electronic pulses, over which he drips lyrics inspired by another exemplar of innovation and imagination: the one and only Prince.
Replete with references to “nineteen-thousand and ninety-nine,” “controversy,” “dirty mind,” “4 U” and more, Black weaves a promise of love, unity and passion through each electronic heartbeat until the final moments when his desire lays bare in a whisper under the sensual hush of rain.
Though the muse is Purple, the song itself is unmistakably Black, with elements of goth, funk and Southern soul coming together to form a sound all its own.
