In this track Jo Def is paying homage to Slum Village and the Chicago Juke scene by sampling SV’s “2U4U” and flipping it into a footwork track. For Jo Def not to be a native of Chi-Town he gave off an authentic sound of the area. I felt like I was a Junior in High School jacking one of my cousin’s Ghetto tracks cds. On another note I don’t know if it was purposeful or if Jo Def even realized he made a Chicago track with a Detroit group! Me personally knowing that Detroit and Chicago have beef when it come’s to their styles of house I couldn’t help but notice. But on the downside of my opinion more could have done with the track to give it a little more flare and climax (pun intended) to make it a little less repetitive. I would have liked to hear a little more hip-hop elements or switching up the patterns more. Regardless, this would be a perfect track for kids to Footwork battle to in the Chi, and I will definitely be checking for Jo Def’s LP Steps when it drops next Tuesday November 19th via Soulection, both digitally and on cassette.
And of course… the original, fantastic, impeccable, Dilla..dilla … beats
