It was only a matter time before we got to hear more of the lovely Tinashe‘s dreamy pop vocals which we have been patiently (or not) waiting for since her 2012 mixtape Reverie. Fortunately, as part of Yours Truly‘s Songs From Scratch series, Tinashe was matched with rising Montréal house producer Jacques Greene. Together the two created “Painted Faces,” a danceworthy house production with heartfelt R&B vox. Twists and turns: The first 15 seconds are reminiscent of the intro to Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” and there’s a (heart)break-down at 2:34 melting with trap aesthetics. The entire collaborative process was captured by YT in a making-of video presenting the fresh-faced Jacques and Tinashe sessioning at the legendary Village Studios in Santa Monica, CA, whilst dripping in adidas. Listen to the song and watch the video below.
On the day that Jacques Greene and Tinashe were set to record their first collaboration, we happened to be sharing the hallways with Fleetwood Mac, and Sir Elton John. Greatness was in the walls, in the air, and the stage was set for the making of a new song — from scratch. – Yours Truly
YT’s Songs From Scratch series previously featured creative partnerships between Angel Haze & Lunice, Shlohmo & Jeremih, Danny Brown & Araab Muzik, and Joey Bada$$ & Chuck Strangers. Tinashe’s debut album on RCA Records is due sometime in 2013.
