Hudson Mohawke Chimes EP Review Warp Records

At last, Hudson Mohawke‘s 4-track Chimes EP has arrived today on Warp. Over the past couple of months, we’ve heard the three original, and highly dynamic, tracks:

Chimes,” the EP’s namesake and leading single (appearing in a Macbook Air commercial) is a bass-filled anthem that sets the tone and momentum for the project. “Brainwave” is a little more subtle – adding a bit of a dreamy element into the mix. Sounding like some kind of transformation, the song is lead by a mixed, warpy keyboard. The award for best song title though goes to “King Kong Beaver,” which is ruled by a full-bodied arrangement of drums, horns, synths and chimes. King Kong is just how big this track is. Finally, English producer Gammer‘s lone remix of “Chimes” provides an option for the clubs with an uptempo D&B hybrid.

A focused body of work that holds its own – just as much as background music as it does in a smoky basement or on the festival circuit – the whole Chimes project only makes us more excited about whats to come with HudMo in his post-TNGHT/post-Yeezus era.
