East Village Radio's Gold River Show Compilation

Behind every great city are great people infusing the metropolis with their essence in a plethora of mediums and modes. For New York City, one of the cornerstones of music and culture, reaching millions of people around the world, is East Village Radio.

The compact storefront-style studio located on the busy East Village block of 1st and Allen Street, acts as a portal into the sounds that make the city that never sleeps. With a 24-hour schedule of music programming, the station is a never-ending source of musical indulgence. One of the shows that has turned me on to an exponential amount of new music is Thursday night’s Gold River Show.

Hosted by Matthew Bernucca, the 10-12pm slot focuses on worldwide underground club music at it’s best. With past guests like Jackmaster, L-Vis 1990, Brenmar, Rizzla, Total Freedom, Baauer and Obey City, the show is a weekly source of new and old danceworthy edits that you’ll want to keep on repeat.

This past month Bernucca hooked fans up with a free Gold River Compilation showcasing a wide range of talent he truly believes in. I love nothing more than passionate people shining a spotlight on emerging music, and that’s exactly what the Gold River Compilation does. The nine-track release makes it’s way through grimey synth numbers care of producers like Strict Face and Copout to throwback favorites reworked into modern day wonders, (see: Wreck Tech’s version of Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison”).

Though this release can really be categorized as “all gems,” my favorite track comes in the form of Paul Fisher’s “Hustle,” in which the young rapper drops some of that San Antonio game atop billowy trap beats. And of course, no compilation would be complete without a closing banger that turns the heat all the way up thanks to Strict Face’s grime-flecked rework of Yung Nation’s “Shawty Wassup.”

Be sure cop a free download of the Gold River Compiliation, and tune into Matt’s show each week.
