Although Hungarian-born Brooklynite DJ Madd draws inspiration from decades-deep Jamaican sound system culture, his musical vision is clearly focused on the future.
The dubstep veteran, known among other things for his contributions to the celebrated and now-rare WAR white label vinyl series, has joined forces with Brooklyn’s Dub-Stuy Records to release a new two-track single called “Kingdom.”
Madd brings his dubstep and bass bonafides to the lead track, infusing elements of Jungle, Drum and Bass and Dub with a frenetic Footwork pulse that gives the dark and percolating track a contemporary edge. Decorated with lion roars, lasers, horn sounds, and synths, “Kingdom” stays steeped in a deep ragga vibe while Madd crafts his heavy bass play in rapid rhythms aimed at a discerning, forward-thinking dancefloor.
The B-side, “Brooklyn Rudeboy,” continues the theme while saluting his current borough. Here he teases us, shifting back and forth between half- and double-time while letting his Dub and DnB flags fly with added echo and a flurry of rolling snares.
