color-plus-diagonals

The newly released Diagonals Vol. 1 could be the best material yet from the increasingly deft hands of Connecticut-based producer Color Plus. Take, for instance, project opener “Bed,” whose disposition comes off as introspective despite a Soulja Boy sample, albeit a manipulated Soulja Boy, with the “Turn My Swag On” acappella sounding here more like an Ambien-affected yawn. The rest of Diagonals follows with consistent formula: an identifiable rap acappella (Birdman and Lil Wayne, Future, Gucci Mane) with unlikely, experimental hip-hop production—the latter part obviously something to praise on its own.
