Tri Angle Records’ 5th Anniversary Party for Red Bull Music Academy (Photos)

Over the past weekend, Tri Angle Records turned 5 years old and celebrated with a basement party in the old J.P. Morgan building at 23 Wall Street. Tri Angle artists The Haxan Cloak, Evian Christ, Vessel, Forest Swords, Holy Other, Hanz, Lotic, Mssingno, Rabit, and special guest Björk were split evenly between two rooms. The vault of the bank was open and a video by the artist Lucien Smith played inside. The video was a short film called “a Clean Sweep,” – a walking tour of New York City landmarks with narration by Glen O’Brian. The vault door and its components were reminiscent of a brutalist sculpture, and offered the perfect visual cue for the evening’s performances.

The many faces of Tri Angle Records, with their individual DJ sets, authored chapters in an experiential audio book – describing visions of a broken future left with only traces of humanity. The DJ set by special guest Björk offered a spot-on prologue to this post-apocalyptic audio novel. A meeting of rhythmic and arrhythmic songs was the evening’s major theme, and cohesion prevailed despite the intensely varied selections provided by the sundry of talent.
