We’ve been seriously blessed this week with an exclusive mix by the one and only, the champ, Four Color Zack. The Seattle-based super DJ just released his 4-track collaborative Slap It Down EP with DJ Scene, out now on Fool’s Gold Records, and featuring M.O.P. and Mad Lion.
Between destroying clubs, being Red Bull Thre3style world champ, recording his new release and simply being every DJ’s favorite dude and turntablist, Four Color Zack took the time to put together this phenomenal 40-minute set of killer tunes ranging from hip-hop fames Kanye, Big Sean, Drake, etc. to Okayfuture faves Salva, Brenmar, Cashmere Cat, Mr. Carmack and, duh, himself and Scene’s own songs. (oh yeah he designs stuff too btw.) We also asked him the hard questions in an exclusive interview, where he got the feels about wifey and talks about his love for green olives, which you can read below.
When you’re done listening to this absolutely fire mix, be sure to watch our DJ heros Qbert, Jazzy Jeff and others flip Zack’s new single here and cop the Slap It Down EP out now on iTunes. #FOOOOOOOOOLSGOLD
Tell us about the Slap It Down EP and working with M.O.P.
The EP came about when Dj Scene and I were goofing off making records for the club, just stuff for our sets, bootlegs, etc. As stuff took shape we realized instead of lifting samples of some of our fav golden era rap artists, we could reach out to them to do real features, as with MOP and Mad Lion. It was pretty wild how fast it all came about. We were lucky to get the features on there since they were exactly who we had in mind when the tunes were made.
What’s the best and worst thing about working with DJ Scene
We work really well together and we are both playing in clubs heavy so we know what we’re looking for sound-wise. Plus we get to test records on tons of different crowds. Bad thing is we are always so busy that everything has to be done over the interwebs. Getting in the studio together is tough with the schedules.
We see you tapped Yung Lenox for the cover art. Did you give him any art direction for it?
Yeah we were thrilled to have him do the cover. He’s from Seattle as are we. He and his Dad are down with Alive & Well, a skate shop I own there so it was all in the Fam stuff. I did super basic layout as reference for him and had him flip it. He’s so dope, he drew it after he got back from the skate park like a champ. Then we had our homie Avi Loud shoot him holding the cover in the style he’s known for. Was cool to get everyone involved. So hyped on it.
What is the one piece of equipment that you can’t live without?
Espresso machine. All day.
What person, living or dead, would you most want to have dinner with?
My wife. Prob not as wild an answer as it could be, but being on the road so much it’s tough to balance, you definitely wanna sit down and enjoy a great meal with your bestie.
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Green olives. Could eat a whole jar of them thangs. Miller High Life, “best” beer ever. Bubble baths… Clearly I like the finer things.
Artists to watch right now:
Oh man too many to list but as I’m writing this my iTunes been running thru Sam Gellaitry, Grandtheft, Keys N Krates, Salva, Holt just signed to GOOD music… Always Jake One projects, Swish from Seattle is on one.
Other than your new EP, do you have any other projects you’re working on this year?
I have a tune with G-Buck and Keno that should see the light of day soon. Working on a pretty wild project with DJ Craze, really excited about that one. Loads of new tunes from me and also collab stuff with friends. Scene and I are already stacking for EP 2! Lots of music. Also lots of design stuff for the skate shop (oh yeah I design stuff too btw). Crazy collaborations there Im geeking on. Can’t wait to scream about em!
You’ve already had quite the DJ career. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Such a good question, idk. Taking things one day at a time, but going to enjoy the ride wherever it goes.
Would a DJ named Eight Color Zack be twice as good?
Yes no question, I’m just waiting for the day.
