1. Ifan Dafydd – “No Good”
And here we are at number 1, a track that caused a lot of confusion at the top of the year when Gilles Peterson debuted it his BBC Radio1 show (RIP) back in February. Introducing Ifan Daffyd‘s “No Good.” Why the confusion? Well, first Gilles never identified the artist at the time, but more importantly, the resemblances in sound and structure to James Blake productions (“CMYK” and his Harmonomix Remixes come to mind) are uncanny. Turns out they were former flat mates, and/or cousins… who cares, this shit is ridiculously hot. Shifted repeated Amy Winehouse vocal phrase samples for the win. This is Okayfuture. Ifan will release a new EP on Push and Run (thanks again for the vinyl, Fawaz) in 2012. In the mean time, you can pull up the 3 or 4 other tracks in known existence from Mr. Dafydd on the youtubenets. Major props to the video too, I believe it’s fan made? And of course, Rest in Peacefulness Amy Winehouse.
Honorable Mentions
So many tracks could easily have made this list. A few honorable mentions that come to mind are Jamie Woon “Lady Luck” (CHLLNGR Boiler Room Remix), our boy Jesse Boykns III‘s “I cant Stay” (over Gold Panda “Marriage” a track off their 2010 album), and of course James Blake “The Wilhelm Scream” and more. See you on the other side!
Thanks to Johnsville (who helped make this list), Nick Hook, Good-Peoples, Mean Red, Joey Taste, URB, LuckyMe, Dom, XL8R, Brownwood, XL, Nick Catchdubs… so many people to thank. THANK YOU!
