As I was compiling this list, I realized that gazing into the past can be a disorienting experience. Time gets distorted and twisted up with our memories and emotions. Who were you dating at the time? What significant event in your life did you tie to a song? Were there bad clothes involved? Are your memories analog, or digital?
In cognitive psychology, there’s something called “the telescoping effect,” which makes us feel like events in the distant past have happened more recently. Because music becomes a part of our mental scrapbook, we tend to think of some of our favorite musical moments, literally, like they were yesterday. But guess what? They’re not. Take a look at some artists who put out records out way back in 2004. Hard to believe these records are 10 years old.
