Roland TB-303 Bass Synthesizer Kompakt

For their 303rd release (amaze!), Cologne-based label Kompakt and its co-founder and techno OG, Wolfgang Voigt will release INSTANT 303, a tribute to the Roland TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer.  Utilizing the TB-303 for its production, Kompakt’s new release will be a sweet return to the analog.

Although it was only manufactured for a short time between 1982 and 1984, the TB-303 had a significant role in the evolution of contemporary electronic dance music.  The 303’s iconic squelching, and almost liquid, bass sound was, and still is, a defining character of acid house music.

Below, you can watch one of our favorite YouTube series, Japanese Techno Girl Love, playing with her TB-303.  Below that, is the 2005 documentary titled Bassline Baseline. And though it’s no longer in production, you can still emulate the 303’s squelching bass with one of its many clones, like Cyclone Analogic’s TT-303 Bass Bot Analog Synth.

Wolfgang Voigt’s INSTANT 303 will be released on 10″ vinyl on August 15, with, no surprise here, smiley face-filled cover art.
