SBTRKT Wonder Where We Land Album Listening Session

The night before SBTRKT announced his highly-anticipated second album Wonder Where We Land, we had the special privilege of a private (and intimate) listening session, at The Log Cabin studio in NYC, with an unmasked SBTRKT sharing personal commentary on each song, including tracks from the deluxe version.

He started by setting the scene on Osea Island, where much of the album was recorded and his many collaborators, such as Sampha and Caroline Polachek (of Chairlift), visited him for freeform jam sessions in what he described as a “glorified garden shed” with a bunch of keyboards, synths, drum kit and five microphones.  Sometimes they recorded in pitch blackness at 2 or 3 a.m., with owls hooting far off in the distance, and a mini projector showing sci-fi films, like René Laloux’s 1973 La Planète Sauvage (Fantastic Planet).  SBTRKT says this is where the album’s title track comes from.

He listed seminal works from Pink Floyd and The Police, along with Kanye West, krautrock, and Hitchcock films as his influences for Wonder Where We Land.  Even the more nuanced details like knife sounds and feedback inspired by the movie The Ring or the recording methods of The Police drummer Stewart Copeland made it onto the album.  Our favorite though, SBTRKT’s mention of wanting to emulate the ending of The Roots‘ song “Break You Off” on one of his own.

For every collaborator and every song, SBTRKT shared an endearing story.  Like how he had to get 17-year-old Atlanta artist Raury‘s mum’s permission to come and record with him, or how he wanted to take London singer Denai Moore out of her folksy element, or what it was like hearing A$AP Ferg sing for the first time.

Emphasizing the importance of the mastering process, SBTRKT pointed out that legendary engineer, Nilesh Patel (often referred to as Nilz) of The Exchange in London, who mastered his first album, SBTRKT, as well as works by Daft Punk, The XX, Four Tet and countless others, had passed away a few years back, and thus, he had to find someone else.  That someone ended up being Vlado Meller, who mastered Kanye West’s Yeezus.

Wonder Where We Land is impeccably crafted, and every track was truly an enjoyable listen. And we can’t wait to hear it all over again.  There is warmth in the familiarity of Jessie Ware’s or Sampha’s contributions, such as on “Temporary View,” and a certain excitement in hearing SBTRKT’s dynamic with the newer artists, like this week’s release “NEW DORP. NEW YORK,” featuring Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.  You can stream both new tracks here, and check out the full tracklist and North American tour dates below.
