Stephen Colbert Daft Punk

All the while spoiling a surprise performance by Daft Punk at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Stephen Colbert announces that the beloved robots’ were yanked from a scheduled performance on The Colbert Report for Stephest Colbchella due to a stipulation of exclusivity to perform at the VMA‘s, and nowhere else for a period of time leading up to its broadcast.

As a result, Colbert aired Viacom‘s dirty laundry (Viacom owns both Comedy Central and MTV), including reading and mocking an email from the head of MTV, Van Toffler, and then decided the audience nevertheless deserved a performance of the “song of the summer of the century.”

So, he danced and lip-synced “Get Lucky” with the help of his friends, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Jimmy Fallon, Bryan Cranston, Jon Stewart and The Rockettes, and even crashed a taping of The X Factor.

Watch Stephen Colbert rail on MTV and their parent company, and then laugh out loud to the footage of his special performance of “Get Lucky.”  And, I guess it’s no surprise, but you can catch Daft Punk’s non-surprise performance at this year’s MTV VMA’s on August 25.
