Machinedrum Vapor City

Somehow, amidst a ground-level murmur (of what must surely be of seismic proportions underground) around him – as an artist, a sound and a following – Machinedrum still manages to present us with new mysteries, in new worlds. It could be the waves still bouncing around from the last few releases that makes this latest LP so intriguing. It could be the live performances, or maybe it’s simply the sonic dynamics of the unique breadth of his collaborations. But at the end of the day it’s probably just the artist… in the studio, going deep.

By now, a good many are familiar with the sound coming from Mr. Travis Stewart. There is a sphere of new stylistic reverberation between Machinedrum and the artists he’s inspired by, and undoubtedly inspiring.  The heavily circulating single off this latest release, “Eyesdontlie” alone can’t build up – or be turned up – soon enough.

The best part of this LP is that every other track seems like even more of a journey than the last. “SeeSea” is quite possibly the smoothest juke on the planet. “Rise N Fall” is wonderfully inspired by the spacier, ambient DnB scene of ’98-’00. And “Don’t 1 2 Lose U” has a killer morphed-out hook over some perfectly bass-soaked claps. The title track goes somewhere all it’s own.

Vapor City is of a new breed… a special one. One that only comes every once in a while, usually when the world is ready, and by artists when they’re really truly in it. This album is ready to take you wherever you, or it, wants to go. Good art is like that; it’s up to us to be there when it’s happening. If you listen closely to the breeze, there could even be a DnB comeback in the air.

Also, do your best to cop the incredible remix by London’s Om Unit of the already massive “Gunshotta,” available to download for a limited time when you become a “Vapor City Citizen” on Machinedrum’s cool interactive website.  Sample the Om Unit’s remix below.

Vapor City is out now on the strong arm of London’s audio avant-garde, Ninja Tune Records.
