Keys N Krates Every Nite EP Dim Mak

Before people were taggin’ every single song as “trap” or some sub-genre of “trap,” (see the current “chill trap” trend), there was Toronto production trio Keys N Krates, known just as much for their incredible live performances of their signature hard-hitting sound.  Made up of members Adam Tune, David Matisse and Jr. Flo, Keys N Krates not only pioneered the hip hop/electronic hybrid, but have been a central figure in the “trap” evolution of electronic music, to this day.

Following up their 2013 SOLOW EP, the guys return with this week’s release of their six-track Every Nite EP, out on Dim Mak, and a heavy dose of cross-country touring (like every day almost), including this Friday at Decibel Festival in Seattle, performing alongside Paper Diamond, Gladiator and Thugli.  We caught up with KNK for a quick interview before they embarked on their Every Nite Tour, which kicked off last nite, to ask the really important questions.

Stream Keys N Krates’ Every Nite EP here, and grab a copy on iTunes.  Read our interview with them below, and check out full tour dates after that.

1. Describe the new EP in one sentence:

Flo: Weird rap beats that hopefully make you feel some type of way.

Tune: Bass music with emotion.

Matisse: Club music with soul.

2. Which track is your favorite, and why?

Tune: Mine is “Are We Faded”..

Matisse: “Your Love” Or “She’s So High.”

Flo: It changes for me all the time, but probably “Yes We Faded” or “Are We Faded”.

3. Fill in the blank. “Every Nite, I ____________.”

Matisse: Every Nite, “I play a show”, at least for the next few months.

Flo: Every Nite, I eat some kind of food that I shouldn’t.

Tune: Every Nite, I sweat like a pig from playing drums.

4. Explain your love/obsession/general affinity for 808s and pitched up vocals?

Tune: We love pitching vocals up because we find it just brings out this hectic emotion and energy in them. It also reminds us of so many great reference points, from Just Blaze to UK bass music. And really, what’s better than an 808 kick?

Keys N Krates

Flo: Nothing is better than an 808. Not even pizza. Pitched up vocals have a crazy energy to them.

Matisse: I might prefer Chicken Roti to 808s, but I still really like 808s.

5. Top artist(s), DJ, producer on your radar:

Flo: Drake, Hudson Mohawke, Hit Boy, Party Next Door, Meek Mill, A$AP Mob…

Tune: Machinedrum, Just Blaze, Baauer, Wave Racer, TroyBoi, 813, WhatSoNot, Lido, Nadus, S-Type..

Matisse: Mr. Carmack, Teeko, Banks, FKA Twigs, Cashmere Cat, Ouici, Chet Faker, Flying Lotus, Grandtheft, Jacques Green, way way too many to name.

6. What are your guilty pleasures (music, TV, video games, food, or anything like that)?

Matisse: We all try to be as healthy as possible, but deep down enjoy crappy fast food from time to time.

Tune: Jameson.

Flo: Jameson.
