French electronic producer Chapelier Fou (Louis Warynski) understands that children are the future. Along with a class of nine-year-old students, he’s created an interactive art/music installation, the Végétophone, that teaches them basic principles of electronic music production.
The Végétophone, which is basically a giant MIDI controller in the design of a fruit-bearing tree, takes its inspiration from nature and presents synthesizers and effects as parts of the tree, connecting sounds as virtual branches, and patterns as fruits. Through its use, the students learn the basic principles of music, such as scales, minor and major modes and time signatures.
Watch these two short videos showing the making of the Végétophone and a demonstration by Chapelier Fou. Be sure to read his full interview on the Ableton blog, explaining the Végétophone capabilities as a teaching tool. Chapelier Fou’s new Protest EP is out now.
